PURPOSE

The main purposes of the Clinical Parasitology and Tropical Medicine SIG are:

·        To provide a platform for exchange of ideas and knowledge pertaining to parasitic and tropical infections

·        To serve as a discussion forum for those interested in parasitology and tropical medicine across all sectors.

·        Promote cooperative collaborations and research on parasitology and tropical medicine across all sectors.

SCOPE

Parasitic and tropical infections are important to both humans and animals.  They can have a devastating impact on the health and wellbeing of humans.  They often place a considerable economic burden on health care systems through hospitalisations and patient complications such as chronic illness, malnutrition and anaemia.

The focus for the Clinical Parasitology and Tropical Medicine SIG is to exchange ideas and knowledge on the control, transmission, detection and surveillance of these pathogens across all sectors.  The SIG also aims to foster collaborative networks and share ideas that will drive research and development in this area of microbiology.   The SIG may also serve as a platform for the promotion of training opportunities and awareness of relevant national and local meetings.

CONFERENCES

Clinical Parasitology and Tropical Medicine SIG hold a Parasitology Master Class every two years in different Australian locations.  In addition, local meetings are held annually.

Other annual conferences of interest include the Australian Society for Parasitology Conference.
