PURPOSE

The main purposes of the Eukaryotic Microbes SIG are:

  • to provide a platform to promote eukaryotic molecular biology research; and

  • to foster interactions between researchers working on the molecular and cellular biology of all eukaryotic microbes.

SCOPE

In recent years, the field of molecular mycology and parasitology has rapidly taken off in Australia, and we now have a critical mass of outstanding researchers working on various aspects of eukaryotic microbiology. These include:

  • fundamental aspects of cellular and molecular biology;

  • medically relevant molecular mycology and parasitology;

  • systems and synthetic biology approaches using yeast; and

  • industrial eukaryotic microbiology.

The Eukaryotic Microbes SIG therefore encompasses the breadth of eukaryotic microbial research including experimental model systems, pathogenic microbes and eukaryotic microbes relevant to biotechnology.

CURRENT INITIATIVES

1. Increase the number of eukaryotic microbes talks at the ASM meetings.

2. Discourage siloed “mycology” or “parasitology” sessions by encouraging sessions based on topic of research, rather than microorganism.
