AIMS AND SCOPE

The aim of the Food Microbiology SIG is to promote research and industry applications in all areas of food microbiology, including food safety and production. The Food Microbiology SIG facilitate networking and promotional opportunities for members through the organisation of seminars and symposia at the National ASM Scientific conference.

GOVERNANCE

The Food Microbiology SIG is one of the special interest groups within the Australian Society of Microbiology (ASM). The SIG operates within the framework of ASM, its Constitution and By-Laws. The SIG convenor is responsible for ensuring the SIG and its members follow and abide by the ASM by-laws.

 MEMBERSHIP OF THE FOOD MICROBIOLOGY SIG

Membership to the Food Microbiology SIG is open to any member of ASM or a non-member with an active interest in the aims and scope of the SIG and its activities. A registered member of a SIG is a person who, on an annual basis renews interest in the Food Microbiology SIG and its Aims and Scope. The ASM Council may determine to apply an annual subscription fee to members of a SIG who are not financial members of the ASM.

 

The Food Microbiology SIG will convene annually at the ASM Annual Scientific Meeting. A National Convenor, who must be a member of the ASM, shall serve a two-year term and be eligible for re-election. In accordance with the ASM by-laws, the Food Microbiology SIG can choose to set up sub-groups at the Branch level, such groups will be subject to Branch By-Laws. Representatives of the local SIG sub-group shall liaise with the State Branch and the National SIG, undertake such activities as approved by both Branch and National SIG, and provide reports of their approved activities to both.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Food Microbiology SIG is responsible for:

·       Complying with the ASM by-laws as they pertain to special interest groups.

·       Attending relevant SIG meetings.

·       Continued promotion of the aims and scope of the Food Microbiology Special Interest Group.

·       The SIG Convenor will also:

o   Attend national meeting with the ASM executive to discuss SIG related activities and issues.

o   Liaise with ASM National and conference organisers to ensure representation of the Food Microbiology SIG at both state and national events.
