We know our members have a unique depth and breadth of knowledge of microbiology. The Society's role, no matter what stage you have reached in your career, is to help unlock and harness the potential of that knowledge to help you build and strengthen your networks and expertise, no matter what stage of your career.

Our principal goal is to develop, expand and strengthen the networks available to our members so that they can generate new knowledge and ensure that it is shared with other communities. By joining, you help us achieve our mission of advancing the understanding and impact of microbiology by connecting and empowering communities worldwide.

FINANCIAL HARDSHIP:

Reduced cost membership is available to ASM members currently suffering financial hardship. Please contact the ASM National Office Manager.

Members may request intermission (suspension) of their membership is any given year due to financial hardship or other extenuating circumstances. Membership may be restored without penalty when payment of the membership fee is resumed. Contact the ASM National Office Manager for further details.

Eligibility for the many awards given to ASM members, including awards for researchers, teachers, students, early career researchers, and clinical laboratory scientists;

Access to the ASM’s quarterly journal Microbiology Australia, online and hard copies.

+ Student Membership

Student membership is available to full-time students of any discipline. Applications must include contact information for your University or Supervisor to confirm student status. The ASM may make an individual assessment for part-time student memberships under exceptional circumstances and will do so on the basis of a supporting statement from the student’s supervisor indicating financial or personal hardship.

+ Associate Membership

Associate membership is granted to any person who has an interest in the field of microbiology

+ Retired Membership

Retired Membership is for members over the age of 65 yrs who have retired from full time or part time work but who wish to retain their links with the society and the discipline. Retired members retain their MASM or FASM membership status.

+ Reduced Employment Membership

Reduced Employment membership is available to any member who works 20 or less hours per week. Applications must be followed promptly with confirmation from your employer about your working status. Membership cannot be approved until the applicant's employer has confirmed the applicant's employmen status.

+ Professional Membership (MASM)

Professional members of the Society are scientists whose experience and formal qualifications are judged by the ASM's National Qualifications Committee to be consistent with a professional level of commitment to their career in microbiology. Professional members must fulfull the following requirements:

  • Have completed the requirements of an academic qualification in microbiology at bachelor’s degree or post-graduate level acceptable to National Council. Other under-graduate awards of less than three (3) years full-time study are not acceptable.
  • Have satisfactorily completed two years of post graduate work to advance the discipline of microbiology.

+ Fellowship (FASM)

Fellows of the Society are those microbiologists who, through a process of peer assessment, are determined to be either specialists in their field, or scientists who have made a significant contribution to the profession.

Fellowship is the highest qualification of the ASM which is granted by the Council on the recommendation of the National Examinations Board. To be eligible to apply for fellowship, members must fulfill the following requirements:

*Be a current financial professional member of the society

*Have completed at least 10 years working experience to advance the field of microbiology

+ Sustaining Membership

Sustaining membership is open to companies and institutions interested in the science of microbiology and wanting to provide support and guidance to the society and its members. Full details of benefits and application forms can be obtained from the national office. The executive will consider all applications, and in turn make recommendations for acceptance to council.

Incomplete membership applications cannot be processed. Please answer all questions and submit payment, this will ensure swift processing of your application for membership.
